If you’re using your Personal LaserWriter LS with a Macintosh® that has 1 MB of random access memory (RAM) and System 6, or 2MB and System 7, you may encounter memory problems. For example, you may not be able to install the software that came with the printer; or, once the software is installed, you may notice that some applications perform poorly or print text that looks ragged. If this happens, try these remedies:
• If you’re using System 6 and have MultiFinder on, turn it off. (To do this, choose Set Startup from the Special menu, click Finder, then restart your computer.)
• Open the Control Panel and make sure the RAM cache is turned off or set as low as possible.
• If you have a number of init files on your Macintosh, remove some of them. (You'll find them inside your System Folder.)
• Add more RAM to your Macintosh. (See your authorized Apple dealer.)
CORRECTION TO THE PERSONAL LASERWRITER LS OWNER’S GUIDE
The Installer program has been changed since the printing of the Personal LaserWriter LS Owner’s Guide. Therefore, some of the information in the owner’s guide is no longer correct. The picture shown on page 94 doesn’t reflect the latest customization dialog box. And the information in the section “Software for Different Printers” (on page 95) gives outdated information about the choices available in the custom installation.
Now you have the following options during a custom installation:
• You can selectively install any or all of the TrueType fonts that came with your printer.
• You can install the Personal LaserWriter LS printer software, the LaserWriter printer software (for all LaserWriters other than the LaserWriter IISC, the Personal LaserWriter SC, or the Personal LaserWriter LS), or both.
• You can install the Font/DA Mover, which is used for installing fonts in System 6.
• You can install the Macintosh IIfx Serial Switch software.
• You can remove any of the software listed in the customization dialog box (once you’ve installed it). To do this, first select the items you want to remove, then press and hold down the Option key while you click the Remove button.
APPLE NETWORK PRODUCTS
If you need to install AppleTalk® Internet, EtherTalk®, or TokenTalk after you’ve installed your Personal LaserWriter LS software, first check the version number of the Network Products Installer disk. (To do this, click the disk icon to select it, and then choose Get Info from the File menu. The version information appears in the lower half of the Get Info box.) It’s important that you use version 1.3 or a later version. Earlier versions of the Network Products Installer will replace your Chooser with an older, incompatible one. If you do not have Network Products Installer disk version 1.3 or later, see your authorized Apple dealer for an upgrade.
NEW PRINTER SOFTWARE FOR YOUR PRINTERS
If you’ll be using a LaserWriter other than the Personal LaserWriter LS, you should upgrade your LaserWriter printer software. The disks that came with the Personal LaserWriter LS include the LaserWriter printer driver, which works with any LaserWriter except the LaserWriter IISC, the Personal LaserWriter SC, or the Personal LaserWriter LS. This updated LaserWriter driver has been enhanced to take full advantage of the TrueType fonts.
To install the updated LaserWriter software, insert the Personal LaserWriter LS Installation disk. Open the Installer, click Customize, and then follow the instructions on the screen to update your printer software. (Do not drag the printer driver to your System Folder.)
IMPORTANT -- If you upgrade your LaserWriter driver for use with a shared PostScript device, everyone who uses the same printer should upgrade as well. Otherwise, you’ll find yourselves reinitializing the printer often.
APPLICATION NOTES
Microsoft Word -- If you’re using the Personal LaserWriter LS with Microsoft Word, Apple recommends the following actions for the best text spacing:
1. Turn on the Fractional Widths option in the Page Setup dialog box.
2. With MultiFinder on, turn on Background Printing. (To do this, open the Chooser, click the Personal LaserWriter LS icon, and then click the “On” button next to Background Printing.)
3. If you aren’t running MultiFinder, and you’re experiencing text spacing problems, please contact Microsoft at 1-800-426-9400 to order the “Word Startup” file, which will be sent to you free of charge.
Microsoft PowerPoint -- version 2.01 may not work correctly with TrueType fonts. If you experience this problem, please call Microsoft Technical Support at 1-206-454-2030.
Claris MacWrite II -- Type sizes larger than 127 points will appear smaller than specified on your screen. This will be fixed in a future Claris product release. For more information, contact Claris Technical Support at (408) 727-9024.
Adobe Type Manager (ATM) -- If you use ATM, you may have ATM versions of the TrueType fonts that came with your Personal LaserWriter LS. In this case the Macintosh and the printer will use the TrueType fonts instead of the ATM fonts. If you prefer the ATM versions, you can remove the TrueType fonts from your system. If you have System 6, use the Font/DA Mover to remove the fonts. (When you install the Personal LaserWriter LS software, the Installer places Font/DA Mover version 4.1 inside the System Folder on your Macintosh. Be sure to use this version of the Font/DA Mover.) If you have System 7, simply open the System file, and drag the TrueType fonts to a different folder.
